Kepler 22B Compared To Earth. Planets must possess a minimal mass in order to retain an atmosphere. Kepler 22b is 620 light years from earth.
It is thought that the object has a mass similar to that of neptune (~35 earth masses). That's roughly half way between the size of earth and the size of uranus and neptune, the solar system's ice giants. Remember, 2.4 times the diameter does not equate to 2.4 times the mass.
Scientists do not know, however, whether the planet is rocky, gaseous or liquid.
This diagram lines up planets recently discovered by kepler in terms of their sizes, compared to earth. It is estimated to be 2.4 times larger then earth (nasa). Kepler 22b is also comparable to the sea planet of water which can be compared to 1214 b. It has less than 124 earth masses at the 3 sigma confidence limit, and less than 36 earth masses at 1 sigma confidence.
